History of Bangladesh Premier League

The Bangladesh Cricket Board started the Bangladesh Premier League in 2012 to replace the National Cricket League Twenty20.

The first season kicked off on February 10, 2012, with a big opening ceremony at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.

The tournament was created after seeing the success of other T20 leagues like the Indian Premier League. Since then, the BPL has grown into one of the most popular cricket leagues in the world.

Fortune Barishal won the most recent 2024-25 season, defeating Chittagong Kings in the final on February 7, 2025. The 2025-26 season will feature six franchises instead of seven.

Rules & Format of BPL

Understanding the tournament structure helps fans follow the competition better.

Playoff Structure

The playoffs use a double-elimination format. The Eliminator pits third place against fourth place. Qualifier 1 features first place versus second place. The Eliminator winner plays the Qualifier 1 loser in Qualifier 2. The final brings together the Qualifier 1 winner and Qualifier 2 winner.

League Stage Rules

Each team plays 10 matches during the league stage. Teams earn points based on wins, losses, and ties. Matches follow standard T20 cricket rules with 20 overs per side. The top four teams advance to the playoffs.

Tournament Format

The BPL follows a round-robin league stage followed by playoffs. Six teams compete in 30 league matches where each team plays every other team twice.

Points System

A win gives 2 points. A tie or no result gives 1 point to each team. A loss gives 0 points. Net run rate breaks ties between teams with equal points.

Tie-breakers

If teams have equal points after the league stage, net run rate decides their ranking. Net run rate calculates the difference between runs scored and runs conceded per over across all matches.

Squad Rules

Each team can have up to 18 players in their squad. Teams must include a minimum number of local Bangladesh players. A maximum of 4 overseas players can be in the squad, with up to 3 playing in each match.

Match Regulations

Matches use the Decision Review System for close calls. Each team gets one review per innings. Powerplay rules apply for the first 6 overs with fielding restrictions. Strategic timeouts give teams a chance to regroup. No-ball free hits and other standard T20 rules apply.
